The Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA became effective in 1996. It aims to protect the privacy of individually identifiable medical records. All entities that process health care data must comply with it.

HIPPA has has brought about sweeping changes in health care administration and information systems. This act ensures that any person who has taken a group health insurance plan must have the right to buy health insurance within a particular interval of time after he or she has lost the previous coverage.
