Originating in India approximately five thousand years ago, yoga is a type of philosophy that is centered on the realization of enlightenment and the release from one’s mind, spirit and body of the encumbrances that can have negative effects. The practice of yoga was introduced into Western cultures, such as the United States, after it attained popularity because of the many pronounced benefits. Many yoga teachers, however, place most of the emphasis on physical poses and less on the detail of meditation.
