Changes in the physical appearance begin manifesting when the dependence has set in. They are likely to lose weight rapidly and become scrawny and ashen in look. Personal hygiene takes a back seat and they commence looking tatty and seedy. Eyes become dull and listless and they often develop sores on their bodies. They foster a vacant look about them.
Since regular intake of illicit substances builds up resistance in the body, the user starts wanting more and more dosage to attain the same old high.
Addicts begin acting weirdly occasionally bordering on apprehension. They will depart from gatherings, absent themselves for no apparent explanation. They may emotionally distance themselves from those that they were previously attached to. With such alienation, it becomes easier for them to use illicit drugs without fear of disapproval and scorn from those close to them.
Drug habit often leads to severe depression. Signs of futility, negativism, withdrawal from company are all symptoms of such depression. Performance indicators at work and school can take a turn for the worse for no clear reason. They may not want to get out of bed for long periods of time and show tell-tale signs of persistent exhaustion.
