What Every Woman Should Know About Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is an inflammation in the vagina caused by an overgrowth of bacteria. There are several different types of natural bacteria that grow in the vagina, and when one of these bacteria begins to overgrow, it can cause symptoms such as a vaginal discharge that has a fish like odor and maybe milky white in color. Other symptoms can also include itching and burning in or near the vagina. Although it is known that majority of women can have this infection with no symptoms at all. This type of infection can affect 10%-64% of women at any given time in their life, but is most likely to occur during the child bearing age.

Even if you have bacterial vaginosis, it’s very easy to treat. Sure there are over the counter vaginal creams and gels, but if you’ve never had bacterial vaginosis then you may not want to run straight out to the pharmacy and pick some up. This infection has been known to be confused with a yeast infection as well as trichomoniasis. All you have to do to be sure is make an appointment to see your doctor, he or she will take a sample of vaginal discharge to have it tested.
There are ways to help you to prevent getting bacterial vaginosis or even having a reoccurring episode. You can do things such as staying away from scented toilet paper or feminine hygiene products, no douching, wipe from front to back after using the rest room as well as keeping the vaginal area clean, just to name a few.
