Over the next days we will focus broadly on the rights of persons with disabilities in Moldova, and more specifically on the recently adopted United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As you know, the Convention was adopted on December 13, 2006 in New York during the Sixty-First session of the General Assembly. The Convention enters into force once twenty countries ratify it. I am proud that Moldova was among the first countries to sign the Convention and its Optional Protocol at the UN Headquarters in New York on the very first day that it was possible - March 30, 2007. This was a very positive step towards ensuring that the rights of persons with disabilities are respected in Moldova.
