Choosing an Electric Guitar

For a beginner I would recommend buying a Classical or Spanish guitar to learn on before progressing to an electric guitar. A Classical guitar has nylon strings, which is why it is easier to play than an electric guitar which has steel strings. Steel strings can be very painful for the beginner guitarist.

When buying a guitar it is important to check the following:-

1. That there are no cracks or holes in the woodwork, especially where two pieces are joining.

2. That the tuning pegs or machine heads turn freely and do not slip.

3. That when you look along the fret board, the flat surface which the strings are held over, it shows no sign of warping or bending.

4. That, as you play each note on each string, moving up the fret board, there are no rattles or buzzes. A cheap guitar will not produce clear notes all the way up the fret board, and will tend to go out of tune as you progress.
