Technology works in mysterious ways
Cellular technology has evolved a great deal. Who could forget how these phone looked like only 10 years ago.
The bulky satellite phones were so heavy you could use them as blunt weapons. In addition to that you had to pay in excess of 1 dollar for a single minute. Mere mortals were fresh out of luck since cell phones were considered luxury items.
But as we all know, the only thing that’s constant is change. Currently the cell phones cost close to nothing and weight even less. From what it looks like this trend is not about to stop either.
The transformation from expensive to cheap was initiated by competition. The more companies compete with each other in price and quality the less we pay. Another big factor was the price of the mobile networks. Wired land lines cost more to build and maintain than their cellular counterparts. This is why cell phone usage is said to explode in third world countries that don’t have existing land lines. This is the reason why many people predict a boom of cell phone use in developing countries.
Unfortunately cell phones are not all fun and games. Things like SMS unsolicited messages and ridiculously priced ring tones need to be closely regulated before they get out of hand. Another big risk are the next generation cell phone look ups. Some of them allow you to trace the exact geographical location of a person. Before you were only able to get the name and the address, but now you can pin point locations with a click of a button.
Many technology gurus predict that the personal cell phone will soon look a lot more like a personal computer. Steve Jobs, the founder of apple believes that soon the cell phones will be used for some pretty serious tasks. There must be some truth to it, since you can already check your emails and navigate on the internet using your cell phone. Application downloads for Iphone are booming and are not showing any signs of a slow down. If the momentum continues we will soon experience a true mobile technology boom. It looks like in a decade from now, people will regards today’s phones as ancient Aztec technology. Which is pretty scary if you ask me.
