1200 Calorie Diet Works, But Not for Everyone
A few years ago, I went to see my doctor for a general check-up and physical. I realized
before I went that I had put on a few extra pounds, but was completely caught off guard when
I learned that I was 90 pounds heavier than my ideal body weight.
That is when I got the idea to go on a 1200 calorie diet.
My doctor had been on me to lose a few pounds for the last couple of years,
but my weight had not become a big problem yet, and I always promised him that I would try my best to lose.
When he finally came in to see me and looked at my chart, the first thing he said
was that it was time for me to get on a balanced diet and start up an exercise regimen. He also
said that my blood pressure and cholesterol were both higher than normal, and if I wanted to live to be 60, I needed to start taking off the pounds.
He recommended that I try to limit my calorie intake to about 2,000 a day, and do some sort of aerobic activity, such as walking, swimming or bike riding for at least 20 to 30 minutes a day. He said he did not want me to lose more than one or two pounds a week, because it is not healthy to lose weight too quickly.
I went home that day feeling a little bit down about the prognosis I had just received, and went online to read about some diet plans. I read about a 1200 calorie diet, and how participants were seeing great results from using that plan.
Rather stupidly, and letting my own personal sense of vanity overshadow health concerns, I decided to go against my doctor’s advice and try the 1200 calorie diet myself, while increasing the daily exercise routine to between one and one and a half hours.
The first week I lost six pounds, but I was starving most of the time, waking up with rip-roaring headaches and usually in a foul mood.
The second week, I lost 1.6 pounds, which is about what my doctor told me I could expect from following his plan, and I was feeling weak and irritable. I started to question the wisdom of following the 1200 calorie diet.
After further research, I learned that there was nothing wrong with the diet itself.
It was the fact that it had been designed for people that were considerably less overweight than I was, and who led a rather sedentary lifestyle, which I did not.
I went back to my doctor’s plan, and within a year dropped almost 75 pounds. I feel
much healthier now and my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal again.
I now know that while the 1200 calorie diet has helped a lot people, it is not the
right diet for me – or people like me.

Advertising Campaigns We Won’t Soon Forget
There are many advertising campaigns that we will never get out of our collective minds,
whether we want to or not. Who can forget that little old lady asking “Where’s The Beef?”
I can’t for the life of me remember what burger outfit was being pushed but that is the
main problem with advertising in general. Advertising campaigns suffer from over-saturation
of ads and television commercials on our public psyche. We tend to zone out when we see
commercials because we are inundated with them on a daily, hourly, and minute by minute

Many of you are too young to remember this unless you watched all the retro shows and
commercials on Nick at Nite, but one song that I will never get out of my brain is “I’d
Like to Teach the World to Sing” which was the theme song for Coca-Cola back in the early
70s. The commercial featured hundreds of people on a scenic mountain top all singing together
and holding hands. After the initial overwhelmingly positive response from focus groups and
then the general worldwide public, Coke expanded the commercial and spun off several
incarnations of it.
Sometimes these advertising campaigns make not only the product famous, but the actor who
is hired to perform in them. Rodney Allen Rippy was just such a child star. I can’t quite
remember what he was selling. It was either Burger King or Beefaroni, not sure which, but he
definitely hit the big time. Many future movie stars began their careers as actors on commercials.
Sometimes ad campaigns are effective through their use of bleak humor or ability to deliver
a particularly dark message. That was the case with the anti-drug campaign from the 80s
that said “This is Your Brain. This is Your Brain on Drugs” and showed a frying pan with
an egg in it. That was some powerful metaphor and I am sure that more than one young
person thought twice about using illegal drugs because of that. These types of PSAs, or
Public Service Announcements can be very effective. Over the years there have been many
of them, none more deliberate or crafty than the old Native American chief looking out
over the polluted waters and shores of the Hudson and shedding a single tear.
Ad campaigns begin in the fertile imaginations of Creative Directors, Graphic Designers,
Copywriters, and Advertising Executives around the world. We have them to thank for the
proliferation of these mind-numbing, sixty second shows that seem to fade into oblivion
so quickly.

The Best Beach Vacations in Costa Rica
In most cases the very best beach vacations in the world can be found in nearby, U.S. friendly Costa Rica. There are several things you should consider while planning your trip however.
Obviously, The first thing is to make sure that your passport is in order. Although Costa Rica
has a long standing tradition of being friendly with the U.S. and its citizens,
the authorities there still require that all U.S. travelers carry their
passport with them at all times. This means that you need the actual passport, not a photocopy. I know of many incidents where travelers were stopped by the police and only had a copy of their passport with them and were made to go back to their hotels and get the document while the officers waited outside.
Guanacaste in the north of Costa Rica just south of neighboring Nicaragua has some great spots for the best beach vacations. For couples who want a relaxing getaway without too many tourists or surfers my recommendation is Playa Hermosa. It is easy to get to and several of the major airlines including Continental and Delta fly regular flights to nearby Liberia Airport (LIR) which is only twenty minutes away. Playa Hermosa is very scenic and the rugged mountains surround the beach itself which is very large and clean. Palm trees and little restaurants with their colorful ranchos and palapas line the beachfront and you can cozy up and get a fresh ceviche or any manner of fish or other tasty dish. Most of the restaurants can make you a nice frozen margarita or daiquiri, and of course, cold beer (Imperial) will go very well on those hot days.
The water in Playa Hermosa is very calm and there are no big surf areas so that keeps the surfer crowd out for the most part. This means that you can relax and walk out into the calm, clear, warm waters and actually see the fish swimming at your feet.
From Playa Hermosa it is only an hour and a half drive to nearby Tamarindo,
which has more nightlife and a lot more surfers and tourists. Going there
will serve to upgrade your trip into one of the best beach vacations you
ever had because Tamarindo has great restaurants and nightclubs. One tip:
never leave a bag or anything of value inside your car when you go out.
No doubt about it, the item of value will be long gone when you get back.
With foresight and planning, your journey to Costa Rica could result
in the very best beach vacation you ever had and you will definitely want
to come back again and again and again.

Why Study Abnormal Psychology?
I majored in psychology when I was in college and took a number of courses in the subject, but the one that always stands out to me the most, and the one that has best served me over the years, was Abnormal Psychology.
It was a class devoted specifically to the study of psychological disorders and psychoses
and was absolutely fascinating. Abnormal psychology not only taught me about such things
as depression, anti-social personality disorder and schizophrenia, but it also showed
me how to recognize possible symptoms of psychological disorders in other people.
I took the class in my junior year as it was required for my degree, and I immediately
became enthralled by the course. Abnormal psychology was so interesting, in fact,
that I would often neglect my studies in other classes because I was spending all
of my time reading and researching the material in that class.
One of the things that I found most interesting was the number of people who were in
the course that were not psychology majors. Several members of the class were English,
education and even music majors, but had just thought that the class sounded like it
would be fun and opted to enroll in it as an elective.
I met up with one of those friends a few years ago at a local bar and grill, and we
talked about the course 10 years after we had graduated and moved on with our lives.
She was now a band director for a middle school, but said she was always thankful that
she had taken that class because it allowed her to recognize psychological problems
that some of her students, and even some of their parents, were having.
I think what I found so appealing about abnormal psychology was that it is really
the crux of what psychologists do. It taught me why people who suffer from mental
health disorders have the problems they do, whether it is a chemical imbalance and
need need for medical treatment, or a behavioral disorder, and can be addressed with
behavior modification and therapy.
I remember speaking to the professor of the class about how much I enjoyed the
course and how fascinating it was to me, and he confessed that out of all of the
classes he taught, abnormal psychology was his favorite as well. He said that he
had seen more students have that moment of confirmation that they had chosen the
right major in that class than in any other he had ever taught.
For me, the abnormal psychology course is one that I still look back on as the
course that made me realize I had selected the right course of study.
It taught me more about the field of psychology than any other class, and I
will still go back and read from the courses’ textbook from time to time and my interest
still overwhelmes me to this day.
