An Asian spearhead has been carbon dated as being over 16,000 years old and there is some evidence that we used larger game as food as much as 2 million years ago. That doesn’t seem likely to me but I suppose it’s not impossible. Archaeologists think it’s the case, tho.

People always asked me for info on fishing for perch in small lakes. Depending on the size of the lakes you are fishing in small lakes can be better for perch sometimes than large lakes are. Fishing for perch in small lakes is easier because you don’t have as much structure to cover and the perch are easier to find.
If you’re new to fishing for perch the best thing you can do is ask at the bait shop where the perch are biting and what the perch are biting on. They should be able to tell you exactly where to go to catch perch in smaller lakes. They pretty much hold in the same spots on smaller lakes where in big lakes they may travel around a lot more.
As I said, perch tend to be in the same areas on smaller lakes. I’ve fished tons of smaller lakes and we had a regular route where we’d go to catch perch. One lake in particular had a huge perch bite the last week before it would freeze over. Problem was the place you could easily catch these perch was about the size of a two car garage. Get a couple of feet out of the area and you couldn’t buy a bite. Get in the area and the perch would bite so fast you could only fish with one rod.

While I love fishing I stopped eating fish a long time ago. Nowdays I either give all of my fish away or throw them back. Catch and release is good for anglers, good for the fish and makes fishing better. It ensures there will be some fish for the next person who comes along.

Summer camp jobs
I have been working summer camp jobs pretty much every single summer since I turned 15. I’ve been a summer camp counselor many time, but I’ve also worked as an assistant counselor, cook, sailing instructor, and in many other positions. I’ve worked in summer day camps and sleep away camps of every description, but the most challenging summer camp job I ever had was at a camp for at risk youth about a year ago.
Up until that point, all of the summer camp jobs that I had worked had been pretty easy. I would corral the students, organize activities, hand out discipline when it is needed, and generally act as a 24 hour babysitter for wealthy kids from the suburbs. Most of the time, they were fairly well behaved, and the stuff I would have to step in and deal with was pretty routine – I would catch the kids sneaking smokes, getting into fights, or sneaking into the girls cabin every now and then. For the most part, I would be able to keep them out of trouble by telling them my philosophy of discipline. I would sit my campers down on the first day of my summer camp jobs and tell them that I did not want them to get into trouble and, if they did not break the rules in an obvious way, I would not not punish them. 9 times out of 10 the kids got it and kept whatever mischief they planned on the down low.

Lake Preston South Dakota is right in the center of some of the best fishing in the country. Close by are Lake Thompson which is great fishing for walleyes and perch, Lake Henry, which is connect to Thompson when the water is high, for walleyes. Then there is also Whitewood lake which is really great for perch in the winter.
I thought about buying on the Missouri River because I read many walleye fishing report lake for Oahe in SD but I really didn’t want to go that far west. Eventually I settled on Lake Thompson between Lake Preston and DeSmet SD.
I wanted to be on a lake that was great for fishing. Particularly for northerns, walleyes and perch. Thompson is a great lake for those and crappies and smallmouth bass. However I didn’t want lake view real estate, I wanted to be right on the lake with a lake front cabin.
It’s also a natural lake instead of a reservoir. The water level came up in the 80’s when they had some really wet years. A lot of farmland got flooded so it has lots of structure, stock damns, sunken trees and trees standing in the water.
There are parts of it where you can fish sand, mud, gravel or rocks. It’s a real snag filled lake and most people have the best luck with bottom bouncers. Lol, I even lost a lot of tackle fishing from my dock.

African safaris and canned hunting
African safaris were made famous by Hemingway and the tradition continues to this day with African safari tours and even a lion safari can be had.
In one way or another, we have all had contact with the work or read about the life of the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway. We certainly don’t associate Hemingway with Africa hunting expeditions or wilderness.
Those who know a bit about the man have read of swashbuckling tales of drinking, bull fighting and hard living. We knew him as an avid sportsman who even penned one of his great books, The Sun Also Rises, around the annual running of the bulls in Spain.
Is canned hunting ethical?
In my opinion canned hunting isn’t ethical at all. Canned hunting is effectively trophy hunting a trapped animal. A canned hunt is a type of hunt that involves the hunter being promised a kill by a hunting agency or governing body.
The hunt usually takes place on the land that the host of the hunt, whether a hunting agency or private party, captures an animal and releases it in a generally enclosed area to be killed by the hunter. The enclosed area tends to be a small secure area so that the kill comes rather easily to the hunter.
This is one of the reasons I never went on a biffalo hunt out in Western South Dakota. It just doesn’t seem right, or sporting, to me to kill an animal that has no chance of escape. A hunt that relies on no skills at all isn’t a hunt, it’s just a kill and under those conditions a 5 year old could do it. Canned hunting is not a good thing.

Bass fishing tips aren’t something I have a lot of. As I said before I hardly ever fished for bass. I grew up in Minnesota and if it wasn’t walleyes, northerns or panfish it’s as if it didn’t exist. What I had never caught was a Musky.
I had some friends who had a 32 foot trailer on their lot on Blackwater Lake in northern Minnesota and my buddy and I went up there a few times with the express idea of catching muskies.
It’s a good sized lake with a lot of different habitat and you could catch bass, northerns, walleyes and muskies. Crappies and bluegills were also abundant but the water was so clear it made fishing a bit tough.
