Working for a church can be pretty stressful. I’m not kidding; it takes a lot of work in a lot of different fields. For instance, I run the music department, but I also plan the staff meetings, make sure all of the electronic equipment is working, fix the computers, plan special events, do the janitorial work after special events, sign off on large purchases, and make the coffee. Plotting your story is not difficult as long as you avoid ‘Deus Ex Machina’. This is the Latin term adopted by lovers of literature to describe what happens when some external device or character enters your story to straighten out all the problems your main characters are having. It was a common way of resolving difficult situations in Greek tragedies 2500 years ago, when people still believed that gods could sweep out of the skies and interfere in the lives and destinies of mere mortals. However, as a plotting deivce it has been largely discredited for the last 2000 years or so.
If you keep your rescuer concealed from your audience until he performs his rescue, you’ll be giving your readers a jolt from which they won’t recover. In fact, you’ll very likely jolt them out of your story.

Storytelling Tip: Set a Cracking Pace
One of the key elements in telling a story is to sustain the pace. It’s not always necessary to hit the ground running, but once you have introduced your main character, shown us what she wants and what is preventing her getting it, which is often done in a single paragraph, we are already geared up to see what she’s going to do about it.
The journey your character embarks on is the same as that your reader is going to take. Imagine you are sitting on a train on your way to visit a friend you havne’t seen for a long time. You’ll get pretty annoyed if the train keeps stopping or if it seems to be taking a huge diversion. If your end goal isn’t so important or pleasant - maybe it’s raining and you’re going to shop for a lightbulb - then maybe you won’t mind the train pulling into a bustling station every two minutes, or taking a breath-taking scenic route. Get it wrong, though, and your reader will get off your train.
